  Scale distinction:  Smooth dorsal scales (sometimes keeled above the anal region) in 19 rows (midbody). A divided anal plate (sometimes single). Split subcaudal scales. Female rainbow snakes have a greater number of posterior scale rows than the males. Loreal scales present, no preoculars. Rainbow snakes have 2 internasal scales while Mud Snakes have 1 internasal Scale
