  Scale distinction: 9 large scales on top of head. Keeled dorsal scales. Undivided anal plate. Undivided subcaudal scales. Carolina pigmy rattlesnakes (Sistrurus miliarius miliarius) have 23 scale rows. Dusky pigmy rattlesnakes (S. m. barbouri) 23-25 scale rows. Western pigmy rattlesnakes (S. m. streckeri) 21 scale rows.
