  Scale distinction:  Keeled dorsal scales in 17 rows (midbody). A divided anal plate. Split subcaudial scales. 1 postocular scale, 1 internasal scale and 5 supralabial scales. Unlike the Smooth Earth Snake (Virginia valeriae) which has 15 rows smooth or weekly keeled (midbody), 2 postocular scales, 2 internasal scales and 6 supralabial scales.
